Brief Service description:

This is a managed service for patients with upper and lower limb deficiencies. This can be from congenital limb deficiency or acquired from a range of causes including vascular/diabetes, trauma or malignancy. This service stands together with specified, associated clinical, technical and support services and involves participation in the multidisciplinary team approach to the rehabilitation of the service users.

Patients can be seen for a variety of reasons:

  • pre-amputation assessment to gain information regarding the amputation pathway
  • a new amputee assessment
  • physical rehabilitation and gait training
  • advice and rehabilitation on functional and vocational goals
  • promotion of independence in the home environment
  • psychological support
  • wound and remaining leg management
  • prescription, fitting and delivery of prosthetic limbs and the ongoing maintenance of these limbs.

The team consists of:

  • Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine
  • Clinical Specialist Physiotherapist & Occupational Therapist
  • Prosthetists & Orthotist
  • Specialist bespoke shoe maker
  • Clinical Specialist Nurse
  • Counsellor
  • Podiatrist

Exclusion criteria:

The team are happy to provide advice and assess all amputees, recognising there are some that will not be able to make effective use of a prosthesis due to multiple medical problems.

Catchment area(s):

The regional prosthetic service within the Dorset Prosthetic Centre is commissioned by NHS England administered by the Wessex Area team and patients can attend from anywhere in England under the commissioning arrangements, although there will be restrictions on where NHS transport can be provided. The majority of patients are from Dorset, West Hampshire and South Wiltshire, but some patients travel from the Isle of Wight, Swindon, Gloucester and West Sussex to access the service.

Referral to the Dorset Prosthetic Centre can be made via a dedicated referral form obtainable from the Centre, or via a GP/consultant referral to the Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine.
