Service description:

This service provides outpatient rehabilitation to patients with congenital limb deficiency or acquired amputation from a range of causes including trauma. Patients may be seen for pre-amputation assessment, new amputee assessment, rehabilitation and gait training, fitting delivery and maintenance of prosthetic limbs. The team consists of two consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, Specialist Nurse, Physiotherapy, Prosthetists, Occupational Therapy and Counselling. The service is an Enhanced Veteran centre. The team are happy to provide advice and assess all amputees in the catchment area, recognising there are some that will not be able to make effective use of a prosthesis due to multiple medical problems. 

The centre also provides the local orthotic service, Neuro Rehabilitation outpatient clinics including treatment of spasticity.

Catchment areas: regional level – Hampshire and patients in western part of West Sussex

Referral process: Referrals should be made to the Portsmouth Prosthetic Amputee Rehabilitation Service at Disablement Services Centre via dedicated referral form obtainable from the centre, or by GP referral to one of the Consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, Suite F459, F level, Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth PO6 3LY.
