Service description: In-patient rehabilitation for newly-injured patients with traumatic or non-traumatic spinal cord injury, who are referred from Southampton, Bristol and Plymouth MTCs and other acute services in the catchment area. Based on Longford Ward, Salisbury District Hospital, with dedicated on-site therapy and Clinical Psychology services.

Lifelong follow up is also part of the service, including regular reviews and a range of other outpatient services.

Exclusion criteria:

  • Paediatric patients
  • People with Functional SCI
  • People with congenital long-term conditions such as spina bifida
  • People with multiple sclerosis or other progressive disorders
  • People with spinal column injury without spinal cord injury

Where patients meet the referral criteria, but for whatever reason (e.g. related to patient choice, rehabilitation potential, best interests, discharge prior to a bed at the Spinal Centre being available) are not admitted for inpatient rehabilitiation, short stay assessment or outpatient review will be offered.

Referral process: Newly injured patients through the National SCI Database and telephone referral to Spinal Consultants. Out Patient referrals also accepted from GPs for previously injured patients not currently under review of a Spinal Centre.
