Service description:

The service provides inpatient specialist rehabilitation for patients with new and complex diagnoses, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, Hypoxic-ischaemic brain injury and acute inflammatory peripheral neuropathies. Patients will need to have clearly identifiable, and ongoing rehabilitation needs and be able to engage in the process.

The unit consists of 13 specialist rehabilitation beds (alongside 13 stroke rehabilitation beds). Patients are approached using a goal focused interdisciplinary method. The team on the unit consists of 2 consultants in Rehabilitation Medicine, rehabilitation nurses, a neuropsychologist, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, and dietitians.

Exclusion criteria:

  1. Challenging behaviour that requires management in a locked or secure environment
  2. Requires a longer detention period under the Mental Health Act
  3. Has a recently formed or unstable tracheostomy (only one patient with a tracheostomy can be managed within the UKROC beds at a time, however a further tracheostomy could be accepted dependent on the wards overall acuity).
  4. UKROC patients under the age of 16 cannot be accepted by the ward. 16 year olds will assessed based on their current maturity.

Catchment areas:

Category A patients = All of Hampshire, including Portsmouth City
Category B patients = Portsmouth city region (PO1-PO17)
